Are you stuck in a job you dislike or financial debt or find yourself unable to make significantly more money than you are now no matter what you do or try? There are a lot of external factors that can impact how much opportunity to create wealth you have in life and I’m not going to try to downplay that at all. I’m not going to tell you that anyone born to any circumstances can rise to be the next Bill Gates anymore than anyone can rise to be the next Serena Williams. We can’t all be the greatest there is in the world, but we can all get better and being who we are and perhaps who we are meant to be!
What would you do if you understood that 95% of our daily reality with money is governed by the images we show ourselves in our mind’s every day, images of our beliefs about money? And not only do we see movies in our mind about our beliefs regarding money and wealth, we watch them without us even knowing it! This is because 95% of all of our thoughts occur at a subconscious level. They influence us without our even realizing they are doing so! Our mind operates this way out of necessity to keep our body functioning and keep us from overloading on the massive amounts of information we absorb every second.
Just about every top entrepreneurial guru and author, and many top sports icons, will tell you that “mindset” is everything. Yes, well that and decades of endless practicing and a great coach and good genes. But yeah, mindset is super important! If you don’t believe you can succeed and that you are worthy of the good life you seek you will most certainly have a very difficult time creating that life! There’s been quite a lot of material written on money mindset in essays, written in books, and entire courses created to address it. Because when it comes to struggling with how you view money and how it stops you in life, you are not alone.
Lots of us are in the same boat. We have beliefs about money that act like a thermostat. You know how you set your thermostat to a temperature you’re comfortable with? And if it gets too cold or too hot the device turns on the heat or the cooling system to bring the temp to where you’re comfortable?
That’s what our subconscious mind does. We have a “set point” a financial thermostat setting, and if we journey too far away from it our subconscious mind starts to activate mechanisms like bad spending decisions, too much time on social media, not charging enough for one’s services and so on until we get to the comfort zone.
I’ve found that many of my beliefs about money come from things I experienced up until say age 17 years old ie growing up. (not that I’m still not growing up in a fashion, I hope.)
Did I see my mother and father argue at the kitchen table when paying bills, yes sometimes. Did I hear my dad say things like “money doesn’t grow on trees!” and “more money more problems” yes that and more. My dad used to say “I don’t want to get rich, I just want to be comfortable”. So at some level I heard okay, so being rich must be very uncomfortable.
I knew my upbringing had something to do with how I see money and success, but I never thought these conversations and images were essentially bits of mental computer code being written into my brain’s subconscious operating system and that they’d sabotage me from achieving success! How could I? I was just a kid. It’s very likely you experienced some of this in your own early childhood too. And I highly recommend doing some inner work to discover the ideas and beliefs you heard as a child relating to money.
I’d love to take a class or watch a video explaining how money is just a tool and we can do good for ourselves and the world with it if we choose to and have that “fix” me, but these beliefs about scarcity, and money causing problems are deeply woven into my earliest parts of my brain and sub conscious mind. They can’t easily be undone by just saying Okay suck it up, and work harder. Or reading a book or going to a seminar. These help, don’t get me wrong. But given how many books, articles and Ted Talks we’ve read or seen on this and other similar self-improvement issues, if learning with our rational mind was sufficient we’d all be fit happy millionaires by now!
One really needs systems and tools to get into the subconscious mind and rewrite the code at the level of our emotional mental operating system! Otherwise it’s like seeing your hair is a mess in the mirror and trying to comb the mirror instead of your messy hair.
Doing the rational level thinking cognitive behavioral stuff is helpful but it’s temporary and somewhat superficial. It’s like motivation, it only lasts long enough until life kicks back in ie all our habits and stuff comes up again.
I’m looking for and working on ways to overcome and transform those self limiting beliefs.
Some ways I’ve explored doing this include:
+ NLP Neural Linguistic Programming
+ Hypnosis: Mostly self-hypnosis.
+ Mediation: Mindfulness Meditation
+ Affirmations: We created an entire program centered on using them!
+ Journal Writing: Very helpful and powerful!
I’ve had the most success so far using affirmations along with various types of self-hypnosis to allow the new code, the new values and beliefs that support my success to take up residence in my subconscious mind.
Here’s one I created and use that you might enjoy and find helps you as well.
I have it posted up on my computer monitor right now in fact and see it whenever I use my computer, even if I’m not focused on it. I also read it every day and use my imagination and emotions to visualize and feel great about all the good I can do in my life and our world with more money. If you want to learn more about the program I created you can find it by clicking on the card. And you can reach out to me here on LinkedIn and I’d be happy to talk with you about it!
What have you found works for you? Or what have you heard has worked for others?
